Understand Your Rights

When journalists contact you, it can be difficult to know how to respond.

Many people assume they have no choice but to engage with the press, or that refusing to comment will make matters worse. This is not necessarily the case.

Press Justice Project helps people understand their rights, so they can make informed decisions and respond to press contact with confidence.

You are not obliged to speak to the press

You have the right to:

  • Decline interview requests

  • Refuse to comment

  • Ask journalists to stop contacting you

If you do wish to engage with the press, note that anything you say could be published or used in an article.

How we help

Press Justice Project provides clear, independent guidance to help you:

  • Understand your rights in relation to press reporting

  • Assess whether press behaviour breaches regulatory codes

  • Decide what action, if any, you want to take

  • Feel more confident when dealing with journalists

Our role is to ensure you have the information you need to make decisions that feel right for you.

If you’re unsure about press contact

If journalists have contacted you and you’re not sure how to respond, Press Justice Project can help you understand your position and options.
